India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of black pepper in the world. The total global production of black pepper is around 3,50,000 – 4,00,000 tonnes per annum. India produces around 2,60,000 tonnes per annum, which constitutes around 75% of the total world pepper production.

Black pepper export from India has taken a major hit in the first three quarters of this year, registering a drop of almost 22%. With the ban on exports to EU countries and other factors such as low prices in the international market, Indian exporters have suffered a huge setback.

The total black pepper exports stood at 26,000 tons during April-December 2018 against 33,000 tons during the same period last year. The overall export value of black pepper has also dropped by almost 20% during the same period.

Indian pepper is being exported to many countries. The export of Indian pepper has increased in recent times. Export of black pepper from India has increased by nearly 30 percent in the first five months of 2018-19.

According to statistics from the Spices Board, Indian pepper exports have been at 50,852 tonnes in the first five months, a 30 percent increase over the previous year’s 39,212 tonnes. The price of Indian black pepper on the international market is also high. This has led to an increase in exports.

Most of the black pepper produced in India is consumed internally and only a small quantity is exported. India exports black pepper too many countries around the world. The main importers of Indian black pepper are USA, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, France, UAE, and China.

The United States has been the largest importer of Indian black pepper for many years now despite being one of the largest producers of black pepper in the world. Germany and the UK are also among the top 5 importers of Indian black pepper. The UAE also plays a major role in importing Indian black pepper which is further exported to other countries by processing it as per their requirements.
