India’s Wheat Procurement Is Expected To Be 34.2 MMT In 2023 Season: FCI CMD

Located in the Asian continent, India is the second largest producer of wheat in the world. It accounts around 13.53% of the total wheat produced globally. However, despite this, the country’s wheat exports remain significantly low. As a wheat exporter, India accounts a meagre 1% in the global wheat trade.

Owing to high consumption needs, India does not rank among the leading wheat exporters of the world and the state agency, Food Corporation of India (FCI) procures bulk volumes of wheat every year from farmers to ensure adequate supplies remain for domestic consumption.

This year as well, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already procured seven lakh metric tonnes of wheat till date and is well on track, to procure 342 lakh metric tonnes of wheat by the end of the year.

Higher Domestic Output Expected Despite Unseasonal Rains, Hailstorms

While addressing the 1st Extra Ordinary General Meeting and Board of Directors Meet of Roller Flour Millers’ Federation of India, Mr. Ashok Kumar Meena, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), said that the estimates of both, the ministry and the private sector signal towards higher wheat production this year and riding on the same, FCI has already procured seven lakh metric tonnes of wheat till date and is well on track to procure 342 lakh metric tonnes by year end.

He also added that both the government agencies and the private sector have to work collectively to ensure that the prices of wheat and atta remain stable, despite the challenges presented on global front.

Extending similar sentiments, Mr. Subodh Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary, Department of Food & Public Distribution, said that despite unseasonal rains and hailstorms in the month of March and April, ministry’s and private sector’s estimates show higher wheat output and this supports the FCI’s wheat procurement plans.

AgriWatch’s Survey Report

On behalf of Roller Flour Miller’s Federation of India, AgriWatch conducted a survey and reported that India is set to harvest 102.89 lakh tonnes of wheat this year, 1.35 lakh tonnes lower than the previous estimate of 104.24 lakh tonnes.

Mr. Pramod Kumar S, president of Roller Flour Miller’s Federation of India also took the opportunity to request the GOI to lift the ban on export of wheat and wheat flour.

He admitted that, unseasonal rains have lowered the wheat output that the country was anticipating, however he was hopeful that higher acreage and yield would create a comfortable situation and hence the government should consider lifting the ban on export of wheat and wheat flour.

The Bottom Line

India is the second largest wheat producer in the world. The country enjoys bumper wheat harvest every year. However, owing to high consumption needs, it accounts a meagre 1% of the total wheat trade. The state agency, Food Corporation of India procures bulk volumes of wheat every year from domestic farmers and this year as well riding on positive estimates of government and private agencies, the FCI has so far procured seven lakh metric tonnes of wheat and is expected to procure 342 lakh metric tonnes of wheat by year end.
