The Zojila Tunnel is a strategic 13km long project in the Sonmarg area of central Kashmir, the construction of which is proceeding at a fast pace. The longest tunnel in Asia will provide all-weather road connectivity to the Ladakh region, enabling seamless military movement and ensuring uninterrupted traffic on the Srinagar-Leh Highway all year long.
On April 10, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways in the Government of India, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and at least 20 other MPs are scheduled to travel to the region to see how the tunnel is coming along. By allowing year-round access to the Ladakh region, the project’s completion will not only benefit the armed forces but also contribute to regional economic growth.
The construction of the Zojila Tunnel demonstrates the Indian government’s dedication to improving the nation’s infrastructure, which will open the door to a better and more connected future. The people of Ladakh and the surrounding areas will have improved access to healthcare, education, and other crucial services once the project is finished.
The Zojila Tunnel
The Indian government has allocated a budget of Rs 4,500 crore to the project, which includes a 31 km long highway in Sonmarg, and almost 40% of the work has already been finished. In contrast to the Zojila pass, which is closed for several months due to heavy snowfall and bad weather, the tunnel will benefit the armed forces by offering a shorter and safer route to Ladakh.
The tunnel passes under the Zojila pass in the Himalayas between Ganderbal in Kashmir and Drass town in the Kargil district of Ladakh and is a horseshoe-shaped single-tube, 2-lane road tunnel.
The smart tunnel (SCADA) system, which includes CCTV, radio control, and an uninterruptible power supply, will be installed 9.5 meters wide by a 7.57-meter-high tunnel.
Additional Information
Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), a company based in Hyderabad, is building the Zojila Tunnel project using the New Austrian Tunneling Method.
The construction of three vertical ventilation shafts, which are moving smoothly along with the excavation work is also included in the Zojila Tunnel project. Despite the difficult working conditions that the workers must endure due to the weather, construction work progresses unabatedly.
