Myanmar Expects To Export Over 2.1 Million Tons Of Rice In Coming Fiscal Year

The largest country by area in Mainland Southeast Asia is the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (also referred to as Burma until 1989). Laos and Thailand border it to the east and southeast, China to the northeast, Bangladesh and India to the northwest, the Andaman Sea to the south, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest.

Myanmar is the seventh-largest producer of rice in the world, with rice making up about 43% of all agricultural production in the nation which is due to favorable weather for rice paddies and government intervention in the form of agricultural policies.

Myanmar’s Rice Exports

U Ye Min Aung, The President of the Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF), in a statement on 21st March 2023, stated that in the upcoming fiscal year 2023–2024, Myanmar anticipates exporting more than 2 million tons of rice.

According to MRF data, during the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2022–2023, which ran from April last year to the end of February this year, Myanmar exported more than 1.28 million tons of rice, while its broken rice export reached more than 812,488 tons.

The MRF President also mentioned, “We’ve earned more than 900 million U.S. dollars for exporting rice this fiscal year already. We can say that this year is also reaching our target amount of rice export of 2 million tons, and we’re targeting to export more than 2.1 million tons in the next year, to earn about 1 billion dollars.”

Countries Importing Myanmar’s Rice

According to the MRF, Myanmar exported its rice and broken rice to China, the Philippines, Japan, countries in the European Union, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and nations in Africa and the Middle East.
