Turkey’s imports of agri-commodities increased to USD16.1 billion in 2018 from USD14.4 billion in 2017, driven by rising consumption on the back of the growing population and a surge in domestic food prices. Meanwhile, its exports were expected to remain flat at USD5.0 billion over the same period.

Turkey is an important importer of wheat and maize and ranked as the world’s fourth-largest importer of wheat and the second-largest importer of maize in 2017.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the world economy, Turkey’s agri-commodity market registered steady growth in the year 2021. The country is one of the most promising markets for agri-commodities in Europe thanks to its strategic location that allows it to serve as a bridge between European and Asian markets.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected import/export activities across many countries worldwide since March 2020, but Turkey’s agri-commodity trade activities were not much impacted due to strong demand from Eastern Europe. This report provides an overview of Turkey’s agri-commodity market: production, consumption, and export of key commodities (grains, sugar, edible).
